While the process of colonisation seeks to divide, squash and undermine collective organising, our processes of decolonisation seek to unite, empower and dream of new ways of organising. janaya khan will give us some tools to imagine new spaces and organising methods, and develop ways to remain accountable to each other, build sustainable movements and organise in effective and imaginative ways. About janaya khan: janaya (j) khan is a social justice educator credited with devising and implementing workshops within the context of educational institutions, high profile anti-oppression conferences, not-for-profit organizations, and youth-led spaces. janaya’s work is underpinned by understanding the transformative capacity of language, metaphor, and democratic discourse as a tool for change, gleaned from earning an English Honours degree at York University. Equally important, janaya’s lived experience as a youth navigating poverty, mental health and addiction in the family, homelessness, placement in the Catholic Children’s Aid Society, and embracing gender diversity has also informed a commitment to social justice work. janaya has had the privilege of working in a number of gratifying roles for organizations like Egale Canada, Lost Lyrics and The Academy of the Impossible. They are currently working out of Flemingdon Health Centre as the We Belong Project Coordinator as well as the Engagement Coordinator for Peel Transitions, a project in Peel whose focus is on building capacity to better serve trans* spectrum, genderqueer, gender variant and gender non-conforming populations. Additionally, janaya’s dedication and refreshing approach to social justice work has created opportunities to contribute to academic and community dialogue. Having presented locally at Ryerson University, the University of Toronto, and York University, janaya is also building an international repertoire presenting in Seattle, Detroit and New York. Recently, janaya had the privilege and honour of presenting the keynote address for Durham District School Boards annual Equity Institute, entitled Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Action. Going forward janaya hopes to continue igniting inclusive and rigorous conversations, which help to foster relationships and create a more just world. DIVESTMENT AS A TACTIC Presented by: Ben Saifer & Santiago Escobar | Location: SCC115 There are a number of tactics that activists can use to make their campaign work, but sometimes it is really difficult when we are up against multi-million dollar global corporations. Where do we start? Who do we target? How do we get people engaged in such a large campaign? Divestment is a tactic that can be used to bring an international campaign home to make the issue relevant and engaging to every member of the campus. This workshop will look at successful student divestment campaigns, and begin to delve into ongoing fossil fuel and war-profiting divestment campaigns at Ryerson University. Choose your own session: #SOLIDARITYISFORWHITEWOMEN Presented by: Jennifer Arango & Kimalee Phillip | Location: Oakham Lounge This workshops aims to talk about the ways the mainstream feminist movement often excludes women of colour. We hope to use this space to discuss how women of colour and their allies can work together to build a feminist movement that acknowledges inequality and works to dismantle systems of oppression embedded even within our own activist circles. GOOD JOBS FOR ALL Presented by: Deena Ladd & Krista Brown | Location: Thomas Lounge Students and workers are consistently under attack. It has never been harder to find a fair-paying, sustainable job with benefits. On the one hand, many students are facing the turmoil of unpaid internships which have displaced full-time workers, have become driven for for-profit industries, and have disregarded legislation governing employment standards. On the other hand, unionised and full-time labour is under attack, workers are fighting for a fair wages, and temporary worker agencies have become all the rage. In this workshop, participants will learn about the ongoing campaigns for a living wage, the fight against illegal unpaid internships, and opportunities to bridge the work between students and labour. https://facebook/events/1500613196841650/?ref=br_tf
