Hey friends, Les here, I want to discuss the two versions of the song Heavy Metal. On one hand, the popular and well played version by Sammy Hagar. On the other, the less popular, but in my mind far better Don Felder Heavy Metal. Sammy Hagar took the Red Rocker attitude to his version with the high energy upper tempo electric guitar driven as Sammy Hagar usually does. Don Felder, however, comes in like a lamb and out like a lion. More bass driven and more subtle electric guitar. Both songs are terrific, Maybe its pulling for the underdog. Don Felder didnt get the air play or recognition Sammy Hagar did. Both coming from the 80s cult classic animated movie Heavy Metal, both making their stamp on the movie and both leaving marks in the music world in general. Unfortunately it took about 12 years after the movie for the soundtrack to be released. Today, good luck even finding the movie to watch let alone a copy of the soundtrack. As for me, these two songs still carry a memory of the film and a mark on the radar of rock and Roll history.
