Hey gang! As you may have seen, to find more out about our walk - TopicsExpress

Hey gang! As you may have seen, to find more out about our walk on April 5th, a few of us (dragged my mother in law and wife along as you can see in the pic above!) did a trial run of it last Saturday. It was a belter of a walk, and proved hugely valuable for sorting out what we all need to do/bring on the day. Below are the arrangements for the day and a brief list of things we found that may be helpful to you: Where to meet: Meet at the car park of the Red Cow Pub (Pontsticill, Merthyr Tydfil, CF48 2UN 01685 384828) for 9.30am. We will then jump into each other’s cars to condense the number and travel in convoy to one of the car parks at the foot of the climb. For those of you who’d like to join us for the celebratory meal after the walk (a main reason for me doing it!) The Red Cow is also where we’ll hopefully be having food afterwards or somewhere nearby. If you would like to stay for the food afterwards COULD YOU PLEASE LET US KNOW by Wednesday 26th so we can give them numbers. Absolutely anyone is welcome on the walk or the meal, the more the merrier. It’s an absolute joy to share days like this with friends new and old. As you may know, many of us are doing this to raise funds for Felindre Hospital and a lady very close to us. What we thought best to do was instead of charging people for the walk, we’ll just take donations from anyone who would like to give at the meal afterwards. We are also very lucky to have a professional guide called Paul Wisdom who’s giving of his time freely to make sure we’re ok. What to bring: Although we hope for good weather, British mountain summits can be very cold and wet with considerable wind chill. Please bring the following: Walking boots providing ankle support are recommended (not brand new) or strong trainers. T-shirts (not cotton as it gets very cold when wet, ideally quick drying synthetic materials) Waterproof jacket and trousers Sun Cream Warm fleece Sunglasses Trousers (not jeans) 1 litre drinks bottle Hat and gloves Small day rucksack, about 30L Prescription medications if appropriate Torch and spare batteries Blister pack The route: Here is the stats and route from our trial run of the route last week: strava/activities/120922999 The route is just over 8 miles and will last around 5 hours. The route involves climbing three peaks (Corn Du, Pen-y-fan and Cribyn). The wonderful thing we found about this route is that there are very clearly defined alternate routes, which means you can climb or by-pass as many or as few of the peaks as you like, and catch up with the rest of the gang quite easily. Level of difficulty: We have picked this walk as it will be a good challenge for everyone, but everyone will be able to do it. There are parts which will require care and attention, so just take your time and sitting down for a breather whenever you like. And with the alternate routes that bypass the peaks you can really modify the difficulty of the walk to suit you. I would heavily advise getting a few walks in before the day, just so that your muscles and joints are a bit more prepared for it. What to bring: We also found on the day that during the climbs we got quite warm, then higher up the mountain the wind cooled us off very quickly. So I would advise multiple thin layers that can be removed or added easily and are not too heavy. Remember, you have to carry everything you bring for 5 hours. Water (at least 1litre) and snacks are obviously very good to bring. Things like nuts, fresh and dried fruit, trail mix type bags etc are great, but as I was told I’m not supposed to be analysing peoples nutrition on this trek so please bring whatever you want! We stopped off several times for a snack and a hot drink. This allows a quick rest, replenish energy but also a chance to take in breathtaking scenery, it really blew me away that we have this on our doorstep. To add one more thing to the list, some of the gang found walking sticks very useful. So if you have any, bring them along as they may come in handy. If you know of anyone who wouldnt receive this info and needs it would you mind passing it on please. Superb Any questions just give me a shout Adam
