Hey gang! I apologize for my severe lack of posts. Instead of dedicating a single post to one band, I’m gonna dedicate this post to multiple bands! I’ll try to keep them short and sweet. So, what am I listening to? 1) A good friend of mine got me hooked on this band called The National. At first they may seem to you like another Interpol sounding Indie rock band, but what captured my interest in these guys is the vocal performance. Vocalist Matt Berninger’s baritone vocal delivery juxtaposed with the light, cheery, and dreamy music makes the bands sound really unique. Plus, their lyrics are also something to focus on as they’re dark yet odd. Check out their albums Alligator and Boxer; they are the best 2.Sufjan Stevens is featured in a few tracks also! Gotta give props for that. 2) Back when I was in middle school, I was a total anime/manga nerd. With that being said, I grew a liking to J-pop. There was one band in particular that I was mad over and that band is The Pillows. I randomly threw on one of their records today and was reminded immediately why I loved them. The bands sound draws heavy influence from bands like The Pixies and Weezer (particularly in their late 90’s releases). They aren’t the traditional J-pop band that you hear in every anime opening; these guys know their indie/post-punk rock. If you can tolerate music in a foreign language then check them out. The FLCL Soundtrack No. 3 holds an excellent selection of some of their finest material. 3) In the mid- 1960’s, Lou Reed and John Cale teamed with Andy Warhol and became known as The Velvet Underground. In 1967, the released their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico. Most of you may recognize the iconic banana artwork used on the cover. But if you haven’t listened to the content, then you’re in for a trip. The album’s style is relatively challenging to describe as it takes on multiple genres. Sunday Morning opens with a dreamy/psychedelic pop vibe while I’m Waiting For The Man jumps right into a quick tempo hard rock tune. The infamous song Heroin puts into the mindset of taking the drug with it’s tempo changing from slow to fast/aggressive all while maintaining a creepy/psychedelic ambiance. The moral of the story here is give this one a listen! While it’s known as a highly influential record, go in with an open mind because it may not please everyone. That’s all I got for you all for now, I’ll try and stay more active here! Love you all~
