Hey guys- this is the second part of my fanfic, The Roughneck. Enjoy! (-w-)-Starly(-w-) “Holy crap, this is one difficult maze,” Rainier said out aloud as he reached his fifth dead end. With no visible map to guide him, he simply relied on his instincts, but they often failed him. The whole place unnerved him, especially since he was certain that the walls itself were moving- he saw dust falling from the ceiling often, whilst rocks dislodged themselves after a low rumble echoed through the maze. ‘There can’t be actual, live Durants here... could there?’ he wondered as he backtracked again onto a different path. As he walked further down, he was certain he was getting somewhere. There was another circular room up ahead, just like the one he started off in. As he wandered inside, a low voice came from behind him. “Oi, you,” the voice barked. Rainier turned around, and saw a bald guy, wearing a complete leather outfit, with a picture of a Durant on the back of his jacket. One of Beckett’s trainers. His hand instantly unfastened his Pokéball. “Who’re you?” the trainer asked rudely, staring him straight in the eye. “Rainier,” he replied curtly. “Aw yeah, you’re that Water guy from across the way, aren’t ya?” he snorted, jabbing his thumb behind him. “Yeah, more or less. Are you one of his lackeys?” Rainier shot back. “Damn straight I am. Come to verse Beckett, have ya?” he asked, his eyes locked onto his. “I intend to.” He sniggered. “Think you’re up to the challenge?” “I’m certainly capable.” “Hah! You don’t sound too confident there.” Rainier narrowed his eyes “One on one, right now.” The Roughneck spat on the ground. “Whatever rain man. Let’s do this.” “Go Cloyster!” “Get out there Whirlipede!” Both Pokéballs came flying out at the same time, revealing their chosen Pokémon. Cloyster hovered in mid air, its purplish-black face smirking at its opponent from behind its steel grey shell. Whirlipede was just a bit smaller and lighter than Cloyster; however, its narrowed, gleaming yellow eyes glared at its foe from behind its grey curled, hard-shelled body, which belied its true nature. “Poison Tail Whirlipede, let’s go!” and as soon as that command was uttered, Whirlipede spun itself around like a tyre, its whole body glowing purple. It shot off straight towards Cloyster, but as soon as the Roughneck uttered the first two words, Rainier countered, “Withdraw, Cloyster!” Upon impact of Cloyster’s diamond-like shell, Whirlipede volleyed off its shell, flying through the air. “Now Cloyster, Ice Beam!” “Go! Again!” Rainier frowned at the Roughneck’s cryptic command, but he didn’t have time to figure out what it meant, as Cloyster’s Ice Beam hit first and knocked Whirlipede clean into the dirt wall. “Get up Whirlipede!” “Whhiirlll...” it hissed, but it jumped up and spun around once, showing that it was raring to go again. “Poison Sting!” “Cloyster, counter it with Spike Cannon!” As Whirlipede jumped up into the air and spun around, sharp, purple darts shot out from its body, heading straight towards Cloyster. Its shell, however, had closed and begun to glow white, and seconds later millions of white spikes flew towards the entourage of poison darts. Neither move had hit its target, but both trainers were determined to keep it up in order to try and wear out the opponent. Dust had now mixed in with the aftermath of the exploded spikes as it wafted throughout the battle arena. The Roughneck, taking advantage of this diversion, cried out, “Now, Steamroller!” Whirlipede immediately stopped firing mid-air and begun to spin its body vertically, the tips of its antennae glowing white as it shot off like a bullet towards Cloyster. “Need to get rid of this dust... Cloyster! Rapid Spin!” It too had stopped firing upon Rainier’s order, but had now begun to spin rapidly, drawing the dust away from the battlefield. A loud, booming bang echoed throughout the Gym as both Whirlipede and Cloyster collided into each other, both locked together in a test of strength: Whirlipede digging into Cloyster’s shell with its sharp antennae, whilst Cloyster tried to resist the damage being brought upon its exterior. Rainier studied the battlefield critically. He knew that Cloyster, although well trained, would not be able to protect itself for long against the constant onslaught of attacks. However, the same could be said for Whirlipede; not only was it a test of strength, but, if one weakened, even slightly, then Rainier- and the trainer- knew it would all be over. It had to be timed right though, otherwise if the Roughneck realised what was going to happen, he would change his close range tactic. He just had to wait for the right moment to strike... And a moment was all it took. As Whirlipede briefly slowed down for a minute, he took that small opening and issued the command to Cloyster; “NOW Cloyster! Rapid Spin, full power!” “Cloyysstteerr!” it cried, before ramming its opponent head on with all of its might. As Whirlipede flew through the air dazed, Rainier yelled, “Finish it off! HYDRO PUMP!” And with a massive cry, Cloyster fired out one powerful stream of water from its body, knocking it straight into the wall. The attack was so powerful, that Whirlipede was pinned between the forceful jet and the dirt wall. As the attack finished, Whirlipede slumped to ground, clearly out for the count. Rainier had won.
