Hey guys. A student asked me a pronunciation/intonation question on YouTube (this lesson - https://youtube/watch?v=TiqMPYIZfs8), and I thought I would share the answer with all of you. xo Larissa p.s. the new video lesson is almost done! QUESTION: I am a little curious about the way you speak. You teach me a good lesson. Thanks, but your voice doesnt simply go up or down at the end of the sentence. you went up at the beginning or in the middle of the sentences. Can you be more specifically on intonation? Thank you. MY ANSWER: Thats a really good observation and question. When Im recording, I definitely speak a little more in a broadcast voice and my teaching voice, rather than just my everyday voice. This is because I want to be really CLEAR in my videos, and pitch helps with that. So, sometimes my ups and downs are, indeed, a bit exaggerated and appear throughout the sentences. However, with that said, stressed content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc…) do cause our pitch (the musical notes in our voices) to go up a little bit, whether thats in the middle or end of the sentence. Also, we go up and down in our voices to add emphasis and to express emotion. So, the intonation/pronunciation rules here are general rules. They are your starting point. But exceptions to the rules come when the speaker puts his or her individual stamp/personality/emotion into the speech to express meaning that is specific to that conversation. Does that make sense, guys?
