Hey, guys. As we were watching Freedom Writers last Friday, I could not help but remember the lyrics of a very powerful rap song, Gangstas Paradise, by Coolio, 1995. Its a very famous song, so maybe some of you already know it. Even I know it, and I dont like rap very much. Its very interesting to notice the similarities between the lives of those students in California and the life of the man who sings the song. For the young boys and girls from that time and that place, the hopelessness and the threat of getting killed were so painfully real. So, I think that this song helps us in our attempt to understand some more about the lives of the students we saw in the movie. Unfortunately, the situation that the song presents is something that also happens to young people in many, many Brazilian slums. Here are some lines that relate to the movie we watched last week: Death aint nuthin but a heart beat away Im livin life do-or-die-a, what can I say?
