Hey guys, Im going to rant real quick, because this MPRIG vote is a real thing that is happening this week and yall should try and get informed before you vote simply based on what youve heard, or based on how your peers are voting. Personally, Im feeling fairly disappointed in peoples understanding of how MPIRG functions as an org on campus-- its part of a larger organization, and the funding that it gets is what actually allows the mac org to exist and do all the great work that it does. Yes, there have been cutbacks in funding to other orgs in the past couple of years, I get it--Ive worked within a couple orgs (and as co-chair of one for two years) and its getting harder and harder to budget when you dont receive all of the funding that youve requested. It sucks. But (if this is your issue with MPIRG) I dont think you should take out your frustration through taking away funding from an org thats working-- it honestly just feels like an unproductive, vengeful tactic. It doesnt mean youre going to get more money for your orgs. It doesnt really tell the administration that youd like to see a re-evaluation of college spending, and see more money allocated to your orgs. It seems like a weak tactic to cut funding from MPIRG, instead of pushing the school to open up as to exactly where all of your tuition money is going. Yes, Mac does a good job in *many* ways of putting your tuition money to good use. This year, the administration has made an effort to start subsidizing art supplies to make art classes more accessible. This is awesome, because if any of you have ever taken an art class before, youll know they can cost upwards of a few hundred dollars in supplies. However, that ice rink a couple years ago? I mean thats just one example of ridiculous college spending-- spending that the student body actually voted on, and approved. Yet honestly, I think what people are really expressing here in making this MPIRG vote an issue is that they arent super happy with college spending. So lets take a closer look at that as a whole then, try and make better choices as to how we ask the administration to spend money, and question the schools current spending. And guys, if you dont want to personally fund MPIRG, you can always opt out of the $12 fee. Theres no need to vote NO and actually get rid of the organization on campus entirely. And read Mirandas post below as to why MPIRG could reform as a mac student org without funding, but would essentially be a completely different org:
