Hey guys! Ok, so I had planned on doing a Sh!t I Learned Today on Monday about standard editing prices. But due to some personal family stuff, I wont be able to. I may go into more detail about this in a video later, but here is a quick thing. Ive seen A LOT of posts on Facebook lately about editing prices, and I want to do my part to clear the air since I have worked with a lot of editors. Editing is EXPENSIVE. It is expensive if its done right. And let me highlight right here. You want to do your background on an editor. Make sure they have experience and ACTUAL knowledge as an editor. They should have certifications or have majored in a similar field. Make sure you dont get a hack. If you can, read some of the stuff theyve edited. That makes a HUGE difference. Look at some of the authors they work with. Try to get a feel for if they conduct themselves professionally. These are all important. Ive gotten along with editors on a friendship level, but not on a professional level and vice versa. Proofreading is generally the cheapest level of editing (typically). And it will normally be a flat-rate but can be charged by the word count. I always try for flat-rate. Copy Editing/Line Editing is the next level in expense. Typically, you pay by the page. Standard prices for an average length book are from $600-$800. Developmental Editing, in my opinion, is the most expensive. I had this done on my first two books. Normally, the editor is specifically just a developmental editor. Expect to pay more than copy editing. So, as you can see, editing is EXPENSIVE. Producing a quality book takes a lot of time and investment. But it pays to have it done well.
