Hey guys and girls, Im passing this on from Jane Davies, the Armidale volunteer coordinator. Below are details of an exciting volunteer role at Armidale Hospital. The training for this is in late March, so if you’re interested and haven’t already registered (this is basically a reminder) please contact Sharon Valks at [email protected] to register for the training. EXCITING NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The Health Behaviour Research Group and Cancer Council NSW are seeking volunteers to help collect data from patients at Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital in Tamworth and Armidale Rural Referral Hospital in Armidale. Volunteers would assist by approaching patients attending medical oncology outpatient clinics at one of the above mentioned hospitals, and inviting them to complete a survey on an iPad. What is the research about? There is growing awareness of the importance of patient views in shaping the delivery of healthcare. The University of Newcastle, together with the Cancer Council NSW, are undertaking a study which seeks to understand the views and opinions of patients attending medical oncology clinics, and providing this data to clinics so that changes can be made in line with patient preferences. An important component of this project is collecting data on a regular basis from patients attending medical oncology clinics. Who can volunteer? We are seeking volunteers who: Have good attention to detail and are able to carefully follow instructions Have a professional appearance and friendly nature Are comfortable interacting with patients in a hospital setting Are willing to learn to use an iPad (experience with an iPad is not required) Can provide details of current immunisation status, or are willing to have additional immunisations if required. All costs associated with any required immunisations will be covered by the research team. How much time will it take? We will be collecting data from patients for one week out of every month for approximately 18 months. We therefore require volunteers who are available for either half a day (4 hours) or a full day (8 hours) during one week of each month. You can choose the days of the week and times you would prefer to volunteer, and we will allocate you a session within this timeframe. We will work around your schedule and are happy to accommodate holidays, work and family commitments or if you would just like a break in volunteering. The project will commence in February 2014 and will be ongoing for 18 months. You can volunteer for some or all of this time, but we would ask you commit to volunteering for at least 4 months (4 sessions). What training will be provided? All volunteers will be invited to attend a 3-hour training session held at the hospital they will be volunteering at. All expenses will be covered by the research team, including tea/coffee and reimbursement of travel and parking costs. Training will include an overview of the survey, learning how to operate an iPad, reviewing study procedures and participating in some role plays. Why should I choose to volunteer on this project? This research aims to try and improve the functioning of medical oncology clinics in line with patient preferences. It is an excellent opportunity for you to be involved in community based research and to interact with patients with a diagnosis of cancer. As a volunteer, we will provide you with regular updates about how the research is progressing. To register your interest in volunteering, Contact: Sharon Valks Direct Cancer Services Program Coordinator Cancer Information and Support Services Cancer Council NSW Email: [email protected] Phone: 02-9334 1789 Please note our anticipated timelines; Submit your expression of interest by first week of March and please include your phone number The interviews are scheduled once I have received you one page expression of interest The Volunteer training is anticipated to take place the last week of mid-March The baseline data collection will take place towards the end of March
