Hey, look. I know I can be a cynic. I have, on occasion, embraced my age by shaking my head at the younger generation. But I also give credit where its due and strive to remain open to moments for personal growth. Today presented one. While having lunch at my local bagel place, I saw a young Latino male enter looking nervous. He was dressed nicely, wearing dress pants, a dark dress shirt, bow tie and suspenders, and appeared to be in his early 20s. He approached the counter and, after a short exchange with the cashier, took a seat facing me at a table near by. The owner of the shop emerged from the back, proceeded to the young mans table where he immediately stood up and both shook hands. A short interview commenced. So as not to be completely rude, I focused on my BLT. Moments later, I heard the owner ask, Can you start Monday? The young man responded sincerely with, I can start tomorrow. The owner smiled and said hed see him at 0600 Monday morning. When the owner walked away, the young man took his seat. As he put his hands up to his chin, I saw relief come over his face and one side of his mouth curl in a slight smile. I dont know this kids story. But, my radar told me that in half the span of my life, hes seen more. He came to this moment anxious and doubtful, and left appreciative and with a sense of optimism. He earned an opportunity. As silly as this sounds, my eyes got a bit glassy, and I felt proud of him. I felt...motherly. I hope he does well at this job and beyond. And, maybe next time I order a toasted bagel, Ill see his face...and give him a big tip!
