Hey, neighbors! What an opportunity! Act now! Both the Cox & Verizon 10-year cable franchises expire in 2016, & the City is asking now what services you think they should include when theyre renewed. How about a community access channel where civic leagues & residents could make and show their own programs? Click on this link to take the Citys brief survey (it says Verizon, but you can fill it out if youre a Cox subscriber). The survey closes on Oct. 30. As of this week, only 242 people had filled it out. Have your say! Click on the link that says Cable TV Community Needs Assessment Survey. Personally, Id like to see a community access channel where Virginia Beach residents & organizations could submit their own programs. The City could establish and contract with an independent, nonprofit organization which would administer that channel, and which would provide to residents & organizations access to production equipment and the training to use that equipment. This would be the channel where we tuned in to see our neighbors, celebrating the history and rich diversity of our neighborhoods. It would be a channel where residents & organizations could show programs of people coming together for common problem-solving. It would show debates for candidates for local office, and knowledgeable interviews, fair & neutral, with all candidates every election cycle. For one example of what a community access TV organization might look like, check out the highly successful Fairfax Public Access, linked below vbgov/government/departments/communications-info-tech/vbtv/Pages/Cable-TV-Franchise-Renewal.aspx
