Hey, so this isnt totally live export related but something I have noticed that is working against a lot of farmers is the romanticising of farming and the lack of education for young people. Im on prac for my teaching degree at a school in Perth and my supervisor asked me to introduce myself and where I come from etc. so I tell the students that Im from a farm and we go grow crops and that I have a horse and a dog and a sheep that follows my horse around called Dinner. I then jokingly went on to say that hes called dinner because thats what hell become one day. The kids thought this was pretty funny and had a bit of a chuckle and wanted to ask questions etc but my teacher quickly gave me a look and said oh, but we dont talk about that here. Shutting down any sort of curiosity the kids had, and I just couldnt believe that we couldnt talk about where their food comes from? I mean the kids werent scared of the thought, but if they have teachers who cant bear to talk about it, or who think its wrong were going to have a generation (that were already seeing!) that are so cut off from where their food comes from! Anyway just thought Id share as it surprised and disappointed me that the fact I had a sheep called Dinner wasnt allowed to be spoken about in a primary school!
