Hey there, Tafaria Castle is looking for: The Tafaria Castle Creative Hub Manager. The Creative Hub (cHub) @ Tafaria Caste is a platform for creative experimentation, community engagement and cultural production. Located within the Romanesque amphitheatre at Tafaria Castle and Country Lodge in the Kenyan highlands halfway between Nyeri and Nyahururu and overlooking Mt Kenya and the Aberdare Range, the site provides an inspiring and quiet environment, detached from the commotion of urban distractions. cHub initiated a multidisciplinary Artists in Residence (AiR) Programme which offers a unique opportunity for emerging and established visual and performing artists, writers and designers to develop artistic and cultural projects within this picturesque setting. We are now seeking a Programme Manager to define, implement, coordinate and expand this initiative. Key duties and responsibilities 1. Define a. Outline an implementation plan of cHub’s strategy in consultation with the Tafaria Foundation Trustees. b. Define cHub’s scope of work and align these with cHub’s strategic intentions. c. Profile ideal candidates for cHub’s programmes and coordinate a recruitment and selection process targeting this group. d. Draft contracts for residents to cover lengths of stay, materials, transport, studio facilities, work produced, sales commissions accommodation and other aspects of the residency. 2. Implement a. Execute cHub’s strategic intentions. b. Develop a method to record and control arts materials’ stocks and supplies, tools; and studio facilities, equipment and other programme needs. c. Establish studios and workshops that meet current and future needs of the programmes and define working and exhibition areas and adapt spaces for creative usage. d. Create a system to salvage and store locally available waste materials (glass, paper, metal, plastic, etc.) including a community-based collection scheme. e. Establish a documentation system for work produced including quality images of work in progress and finished pieces for cHub publications (website, catalogues, presentations, etc.) f. Connect cHub with local community; identify collaborators and key leaders in the area with whom to develop creative projects (schools, development groups, churches, etc.). g. Set up periodical events to showcase work produced to local community along with an online publication for a broader audience. h. Create a website and promote cHub within local and international cultural and social networks. i. Coordinates public art projects as needed by the programmes. 3. Coordinate a. Manage the Artists in Resident programme, including selection, logistics, operations, budget and facilities. b. Act as primary liaison between artists in residence and Tafaria Castle and Tafaria Foundation staff and administration in facilitating residents’ requirements. c. Work with Tafaria Foundation and partner institutions to develop donor relations within Kenya and explore other international possibilities. d. Assist in the assessment of the success of residents by executing periodical programme and residency evaluations. 4. Expand a. Publish and promote cHub’s programme and outputs on key international digital platforms and open international application process for the future. b. Market and promote cHub and the Artists in Residence programme in partnership with other cultural institutions by maintaining an active role in the national arts scene, arts education, arts administration and youth development communities. c. Strengthen community outreach efforts, educational activities and involvement of local leaders in cHub’s mission Personal attributes The ideal candidate should be an enthusiastic cultural agent and arts manager, fully committed to the development of cHub and linking it with local and international arts and cultural personalities and organisations. S/he should demonstrate a profound understanding and vision of the role of arts and culture in societal development and be willing to advance this within Kenya and East Africa. The candidate should demonstrate initiative and the ability to provide solutions within a context of liberating constraints. S/he must have strong interpersonal skills and good communication abilities; be experienced in the management of people and resources; be able to cultivate and steward strategic and meaningful partnerships; and be a creative developer of arts and culture programmes and activities. Qualifications and experience • Bachelor’s degree in Arts Management, Cultural Studies or Art History preferred. • 1 - 2 years administrative experience preferably in a cultural organization, art / design school, gallery or museum. • Participation in an arts residency would be an advantage.
