Hey virtual FB family. I have been in touch with folks putting together a program and funding to rebuild the John Coltrane home in Dix Hills, New York. Please see below for details on a special event and how you can get involved...Thx Hello, I would like to tell you about a project that I have been working on for 9 1/2 years. The world famous jazz musician John Coltrane lived in Dix Hills, where he composed all of his last works, including "A Love Supreme", regarded as one of the most significant compositions in all of American Music. John Coltrane passed away in 1967 at the age of 40. He left a musical legacy known throughout the world. In addition, he left behind a message of equality for all. He spoke with his instrument, as Martin Luther King spoke with his words. Even President Barack Obama has a picture of John Coltrane in the halls of the White House. In 2004, I became aware that his Dix Hills home was scheduled for demolition. I felt that I could not let that happen. I started a grass roots campaign, which reached all over the world. The Town of Huntington received letters of support from more than 20 countries and ultimately designated the home as a landmark, saving it from demolition. The Town of Huntington purchased the home and property in 2005 and deeded ownership of the home to a non-profit organization that I started, "Friends of the Coltrane Home". Our goal is to restore the home and open it to the public as a tribute museum to John and Alice Coltrane and their mission to be "A Force for Good". Since 2004, the home has been listed on the NY State and National Register of Historic Places. In 2011, it was designated as one of the 11 most endangered sites in the United States. The story has been covered by The NY Times, The BBC, Newsday, The CBS Early Show, WPIX-11, NBC-TV, News12, The New York News, The Long Islander and countless other media outlets. Please see our website, thecoltranehome.org We have made steady progress toward restoration, but due to the severe damage suffered by years of vacancy, an almost complete restoration is required. We are currently in the process of replacing the roof, soffits, gutters and remediating the interior mold. When that is complete, we will need to continue our restoration, but funds are limited. I would like to let you know about our fundraising brunch, on Oct 6th, at EN Brasserie in NYC. The brunch will be hosted by Carlos Santana. Ravi Coltrane and his band will perform. We will have several notable speakers and attendees, including Dr. Cornel West, Stanley Crouch, Ashley Kahn and others. If you would like to meet Carlos, Ravi and others, we would love for you to attend. You can see the details of the brunch on our website. In addition, today we launced an IndieGoGo campaign to raise money to support the restoration. Please visit the indiegogo campaign at: indiegogo/projects/restore-the-john-and-alice-coltrane-home-in-dix-hills Even a $5 contribution will help raise awareness of the campaign by increasing its "ranking" on the IndieGoGo site, giving us more visibility, so please logon to IndieGoGo and make a small contribution. Lastly, if you would like to help with the restoration, we can use the help of contractors, plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other tradesmen. Thanks for your support Steve Fulgoni [email protected]
