Hey yall, just posting a little something this morning with a heavy heart. Oftentimes, we meet folks that impact our lives in a subtle, but powerful way. Its not that they do a lot for you, or you speak with them often or even see them often, but they mattered to you. I just lost that person to cancer a few days ago that was that kind of person. Getting into the cooking game is a tough endeavor. Most Executive Chefs look at self taught chefs as being...well, less than what a chef is supposed to be. I had two guys to reach out to me with open arms and helped validate that fact that I was supposed to cook. Chef Ken Dixon and Chef Paul Hughes were my guys. Chef Dixon reached out to me via Facebook and weve been buds on the grind every since. I dont care what issue Im having in the kitchen, that is my go to guy. Chef Hughes was Chef Dixons go to guy. They were road dawgs, big homies, brother from another mother, ride or die and best friends to each other. It was Chef Hughes that recently passed. As I reflect on my short time with Chef Hughes, he allowed Chef Dixon to bring me into the fold at the Detroit Yacht club to begin my training. When I met Chef Hughes for the first time, he gave me a big old smile after Chef Ken introduced us and said, Welcome to the family. Ive heard a lot about you! That made my day! Come on! I am here at the famed Detroit Yacht Club with Chef Ken AND Chef Paul!! Man, that is a dream place to be for an aspiring chef! When the restaurant opened and even though Chef Hughes was sick, he and Chef Dixon always gave advice and said that if I ever needed them for anything that they were just a short car ride away. Chef Hughes meant that. Chef Dixon meant that. That mattered. They mattered. They matter... Folks, no need to wait until tomorrow to tell someone that they are appreciated. I try my best to tell folks that I truly appreciate them whenever I can. Its akin to giving them flowers before they pass and not after they pass when it really doesnt matter a whole lot.. Pick up the phone and just say hello to that person that helped shape who you proudly became. Tell someone that you appreciated the fact that they cooked you a meal...even if youve been getting meals cooked for years by that same person. Tell the Pastor that you appreciated the sermon...not because he is the Pastor, but more so because he took the time to preach to you. Tell your kids that you appreciate them because they matter. Tell your ride or die friend...your best buddy that you appreciate the friendship. No reason...just because. He/she may not be back tomorrow....or even later on today. See, its not how much someone can do for you...its simply about how that person has touched your soul...and you appreciate it. Good morning folks...have an awesome day...I appreciate you all because simply put, you matter to me. My prayers go out to Chef Paul and his family as well as Chef Ken. I appreciate you both my friend...yall matter to me always...
