Hi All, I wanted to post this for all to see as it might get lost in the comments of where I originally posted it. I was at the meeting and walk through a couple of weeks ago with the town planner to discuss what to do with the grant money we received to revitalize the town. The consensus was to make the town look prettier and this will somehow attract new business. There was a proposed plan to change Hale St into something of an artists community with lofts, a farmers market and shops and restaurants. This would be sort of split between the college and the town. I thought this idea had real legs, and could encourage more businesses to spread to Broad St. I made the argument that this kind of project brings young, married, upwardly mobile couples to the town. Also, it gives the kids who go to BSU a reason to hang around town and spend some money. Most of the meeting looked at me crazy and was more interested in making downtown more pedestrian friendly. I then made the argument that why would anyone walk around a pretty down town that has nothing to offer. My wife and I grew up here, and went to BSU and would like to continue to raise our family here. But it seems to me that most of the town is out of touch and wants to continue to develop more houses and apartments. It is a real shame cause you couldnt ask for a better location for business, being on the commuter rail, close to hwy access and 12,000 college students with disposable incomes. As it is, we are planning a future outside of Bridgewater due to the stagnation of the town and its allergic reaction to progress.
