Hi All Some thoughts on reconditioning a damaged head. First picture shows were I have used a counter bore to spot face the surfaces were the head bolt washers seat. This is important to have the thickness of the seat to the gasket side of the head very accurate when you machine the face of the head.. Next I mounted the head in my special head machining fixture using a golf ball in the combustion chamber to hold the head tight to the fixture. Now I can machine the full surface of the head. In the case of a 91 B1 head there is a .005 step between the inner part of the head and the outer part were the bolt holes are. This is really easy to maintain doing it the way I do. Last think I do is using 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper on my granite surface plate I lap the head surface to remove any machine marks and get it really smooth. I do the same thing to the bottom of the block as well as the intake manifold mounting surface. Trust me on these old engines these two very important surfaces are never flat. I also do the top of the block were the head bolts on. You want things nice and flat and smooth so the gaskets will seal really well. Also does not cause distortion to the block when you have it all bolted together. You should do the same thing to the mounting surface of the intake manifold.
