See more info below: State Recycling Initiative Topic of August 4 Public Meeting The White Lake Area Sustainability Network will sponsor a presentation on Governor Snyder’s state recycling initiative by Bryce Feighner, Chief of the Office of Waste Management and Radiological Protection of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The presentation is scheduled for Monday, August 4, 6 to 8 p.m. at the White Lake Community Library, 3900 White Lake Drive in Whitehall. In April this year, Governor Snyder announced a $1 million dollar statewide recycling initiative to increase the number of counties providing convenient access to recycling. The state, after being a leader with its bottle deposit legislation in the 1970s, has fallen behind other states in providing community recycling, with a recycling rate of approximately 15%, much lower than the national rate of 35%. According to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, about $435 million dollars’ worth of materials that can be recycled goes instead to landfills. The initiative seek to double the state’s rate of recycling by 2017. The recycling initiative will focus on four areas, including collecting and analyzing data, public education and technical assistance for communities to develop recycling programs, incentives for increasing participation and improving access, and improving the markets for recycling products. The meeting is open to the public and there will be a question and answer session after Mr. Feighner’s presentation. Mr. Feighner will also attend a luncheon and panel discussion on White Lake area sustainability efforts during the day. The White Lake Sustainability Network is a program of the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Members of the group meet monthly and help to implement local sustainability projects, coordinate educational events, and improve community recycling. The goals of the Sustainability Network are to: Educate on sustainability Implement sustainability, and Promote a sustainable ethic that is visible to residents and visitors Practicing sustainability means combining economic, environmental and social goals in a manner that provides sufficient resources for both current and future generations.
