Hi All We have had a terrific time here at Denham. Monkey Mia is only 28km away and that is where we spent yesterday morning. For those that don’t know there is a pod of wild dolphins that come in for feeding 3 times each morning. We got there at 9.30 and didn’t have to wait long for them to arrive. About 12 turned up including one called Nicky. She was originally called Nick but later on the rangers worked out that the dolphin was actually a female so the name was changed to Nicky. She has had a few babies over the years but unfortunately not many survived, the same was found with the other dolphins. There was a study done of them and it was concluded that they were being overfed, once they changed that the calves had a higher survival rate. We were not allowed to touch them we just had to let them decide if they wanted to have an interaction or not, thankfully they were willing. I actually got to feed a fish to Nicky, I was totally chuffed. This was one of the things I most wanted to do on this trip, I had looked forward to it for weeks. As it was my birthday it was one of the best birthday presents I have ever had. There was interaction with a few of them, what they do is come close and get their heads on the surface and roll slightly on their sides and look everyone over, it was absolutely magic. I hadn’t realised before now how long lived they are, Nicky is 38, they don’t start breeding until they are about 11 or 12 years old. In the afternoon we took a flight over the area, it was amazing. The landscape is sand. One of the other things I wanted to do was stand on the most western part of the mainland. We flew over that point and I am glad we didn’t drive there, it was up and down sand dunes with no areas for walking. The drive would have been a return of 320km from Hamelin, a long day.The cliffs were very sheer and about 400ft high, a very rugged coastline. From here we have a free camp at Galena Bridge, over the Murchison River, which is about 200km from here. Then we go into Kalbarri for 4 nights. We have heard so much about this place we are really looking forward to being there. They are sealing some roads in the National Park so we can’t drive there. The only ones that are permitted are bus operators or tour operators. Natures Window is one of the places we are going to. Cheers for now Graham and Jenny
