Hi All, we received a question and we thought more of you may be interested: How do I make my voice heavier? A heavier vocal sound would generally be referring to one of two possibilities: From a CLASSICAL perspective, it would make sense that the singer is wanting more resonance and tone in the sound. This would require three fundamental adjustments: 1) complete vocal fold closure will guard against any breathiness in the sound. This is called ONSET in singing and is a dynamic area of ALL vocal study. Any unintentional breathiness in the voice is a sign of poor vocal fold closure and will prevent the singer gaining more tone or heaviness 2) more supported breath flow will result in greater energy from the vocal folds themselves. The skill here is to realise the difference between breath PRESSURE which is bad and appropriate breath FLOW which is good, and 3) an adjustment of mouth shape to better harness available vocal energy so that the core of tone coming from the vocal folds themselves is maximised and not weakened or dampened by poor mouth (vowel) shaping. An important classical singing idea here is that VOLUME is very related to RESONANCE, not force or pressure which causes much grief to less-well trained singers. From a CONTEMPORARY perspective, an increase in vocal tone or heaviness would usually be an adjustment in the muscle that is underlying the vocal folds themselves. This VOCALIS (thyroarytenoid) muscle is responsible for giving an overall shape to the vocal folds which affects vocal tone more than any other technical adjustment. By varying the MASS and SHAPE of the vocals muscle, the heaviness of a sound can be adjusted. As the vocalis muscle becomes thicker, the sound moves more to what we call BELTING and requires careful and graduated use of inextricably associated support muscles in the upper body. This is a CRUCIAL PART OF DRIVEN CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUE, without which physical damage can be done almost immediately to the vocal folds themselves. Additionally careful acoustic (vowel) shaping is also required to balance the dangers of hyper-function of the vocalis muscle and other associated SUPPORT MUSCLES. As an aside, I would almost NEVER encourage a singer to make a heavier sound. As explained above, a BALANCED increase of energy and technique is the answer to safe, lasting and artistic vocal development.
