Hi Andrew of The Floyd Void, I have conversation topic for you. In the wake of Pearl Jams debuts producers death, I revisited Ten after God knows how long and found quite a lot I didnt pick up on til now. Things like basslines, soloing, the drums, etc. The vocals always spoke for themselves to me. Eddie Vedder is an incredibly dynamic vocalist. But, essentially what Im trying to say is that I finally have clear grasp on what made the album so great: its a jam album for the most part if not for the entirety of the album. Albeit the songs were based off of jams and not directly jams themselves (although that wouldve been an interesting album). But I think given what bands like RHCP do in the process of songwriting that songs being based off of jams isnt necessarily this monumental and original idea since this is part of aforementioned bands songwriting book since the early 80s. Most likely further. Which is why I think I prefer Vitalogy to Ten most days seeing the former is more lyrically and instrumentally focused and thought through. More rhythmic, which is probably also why I like St. Anger by Metallica a lot. However, I do think if youre pinning both Ten and Vitalogy together youre essentially pinning Beck albums or Velvet Underground or even Nirvana albums against each other since were talking about a whole different era of lyrical and instrumental composition and execution. You know? Essentially Kill Em All Metallica vs. Death Magnetic Metallica in a sense. So the point Im getting at is I now fully understand what it is that made Ten such a significant album in the world of Grunge and Alternative music as a whole. A classic if you will. But, in terms of subjectivity and to an extent objectivity, I very much think Vitalogy was the better album in its way. Das all.
