Hi ELS, 2nd Semester Students, if you dont mind read it: CRIMINAL LAW VOCABULARY: Laws which seek to prevent people from deliberately or recklessly harming each other or each others property. Criminal Law The states side in a criminal case. Prosecution A less serious crime. Misdemeanor A more serious crime. Example: murder, robbery, arson... felony Fair procedures that the police and government must follow. Guaranteed in the 5th amendment. Due process Being convicted of a crime. Guilty The standard by which the prosecution has to prove their case. There can be NO doubt. Beyond a reasonable doubt. To agree to pled guilty to a lesser charge. This avoids a trial and possibly a harsher sentence. Plea bargain Hearing when the defendant enters a plea of guilt or innocence. Arraignment Money paid by a defendant to be released from police custody until the trial. Bail Period of time when you are released from custody with conditions. If you do not meet the conditions you can be ordered back to jail. Probation A court order to stop something. Injunction A formal charge. Indictment Someone under 18 who continually breaks the law. Juvenile delinquent. The authority of the court to hear or decide a case. Original, appellate, exclusive, or concurrent . Jurisdiction
