Hi Everyone. Arcadia Publishing has recently asked me and the Silver Spring Historical Society if we would be interested in publishiing a third Silver Spring book in their new Images of Modern America series. Recognizing that additional vintage images for many communities (like Silver Spring) can be difficult to procure, Arcadia has created this new series. It will include images from the second half of the 20th century to date with the most exciting feature being that it will be published in FULL COLOR! We would like to undertake this project but will very much need your help. The SSHS archives has perhaps a couple dozen color 35mm slides of Silver Spring taken in the 1950s and 60s and hundreds of photographs that have been taken starting in the early 1990s. The decades in between? Nothing. I know they are out there because I have seen some amazing images here on this group page as well as other places online. Arcadia requires around 200 images before they will agree to publish. We can only do this with your help, which would involve doing one of two things. Folks who have good color photos of places taken in downtown Silver Spring would have to scan them at 600 dpi as tiff files and either burn them onto a CD and email them to SSHS (I think said files would be too big to email but you could try to sshistory@yahoo) or snail mail them to us and we would scan them and send them back if you want them returned (SSHS, PO Box 1160, SS, MD 20910-1160). Either way we would want as much information as you could give about each photo (particularly exact year photos were taken, identification of people in photos, etc.). Each person whose photo(s) are used would be credited in the book. Again, this project will only happen if you and all of your Silver Spring families and friends contribute I and future generations of Silver Spring residents will thank you. Jerry A.
