Hi Everyone, This morning we arrived at Dravuni Island to a bright sunny day. The ship was anchored off the island and tenders took you ashore. Tiny Dravuni Island has no airport, so its few visitors arrive in small boats. Home to a semi-communal tribal clan, its University of the South Pacific Marine Research Station, built on a small lagoon, contributes much knowledge to various fields of marine science. Although there are no tourist shops on the island, you may see intricate filigree jewellery, woodcarvings, seashells, woven goods & tapa cloth. The locals appreciate the tourist ships visiting as it is the only way that they can market their wares. There are no roads and no cars on the island. The locals are very happy to share information about their homes which are very primitive with a cooking area outside the house. Until the 1920s cannibalism was practised in many South Pacific Islands. There is a small school for the junior children. The older children have to leave the island and go to Suva to school. Nev went ashore but as I had a tummy bug I stayed on the ship near a loo. I self diagnosed my complaint as having eaten salmon for breakfast. Nev really enjoyed hi time on the island and had a coconut massage. He says that it is close to Paradise. Our Trivia was better than yesterday and we came second again. You will hear us cheering if we can win just once. We are at Suva tomorrow so hope for good weather. The Great Gatzby was shown tonight but as we were at dinner we missed it. We went to see the Deck Party at 10pm, stayed for some food photos and decided to come to my office to type and send an email.
