Hi Folks--Another history lesson. Im really enjoying us all trying to remember the old days. So, its 1957-58-59, The Roadrunners Car Club was formed by guys like Jimmy Williams and Phil Ivester. Jimmy had a really hot 1956 Chevrolet and Phil had a 1958 Chevy Convertible with a 348 engine, all customized with no doorhandles, etc. They were really something until Roger Chiles got his 1957 Chevy with a really hot engine. The Roadrunners group was never affilitated with any other club. Just a bunch of car guys getting the plate made to hang down from the back of their car and getting together to talk cars. They were also among the very first to frequent Jobes Drive In on a regular basis. When Jobes first opened there were no parking slots and service and ordering was done by carhops. It was a mess in the parking lot. Robbie made the genius move to have a drive around with intercom slots and carhops to serve the food to the cars. I was only 14-15 and could not drive but, boy, I always wanted a hot car. I guess Ive never grown out of it; been driving hot cars all my life. So, Sherry Ivester, you are right about Phil and the Roadrunners. It was for only a few years, though. To Jan Miller, yes, my brother, David, was Drum Major in the band his senior year, 1968. I played sports and David played in the band. So, to Shirley F. Teal-Brunkhorst and all, one of my favorite memories was going to the Barber Shop on Saturdays and waiting for a haircut from either ED Fuchs or the other man, Eddie XXX (Dont remember his last name). The two Eds told jokes and gave shaves and haircuts and a nice shoeshine man gave us shines for a quarter. The place smelled like aftershave and hairtonic. Spittoons on the floor. Everybody knew everybody and it was so much fun. Ed would give me a haircut for free after a football game. Sometimes after the haircut Dad and I would go over to Schooling Drug (where Mike Bryants Dad Aubrey was the Pharmacist) and get a cherry coke from the fountain drink bar. Probably cost 10 cents. In later years when I could drive, I got Dads car for a Saturday night. Picked up my date and drove to Jobes. Went to a movie and drug Main for the evening. Back and forth, Jobes-Bowling Alley-Main Street. Next morning on the way to Church my Dad asked me where did you go last night? I said, nowhere, just around town.. He said my God, son, you put 50 miles on the car!! That was our life back then in our little HOME TOWN.
