Hi Folks... With the school term having started a few days ago it is evident that many parents don’t know how to drive when in the vicinity of a school. In the 1970s around 25 percent of kids were transported to school by car. Today a staggering 70 percent of children are hitching a ride to school in the family car, according to the Monash University Accident Research Centre in Australia. As congestion around schools has increased, so has the risk to our children. Let’s take this opportunity to share our concerns with the appropriate authorities at the schools our children attend and remind motorists to slow down. Let’s be extra cautious as students settle down for the year ahead. Observe a 40km/h speed limit from 7am and take cognizance of the fact that most children are “ignorant” about speed and the dangers associated therewith – remember it takes a car about 30 meters ( including reaction time ) to come to a stop from 60 kph. Why not suggest a poster (such as this sign shown below) be displayed in the school yard / parking area so that it serves as a reminder to all. Till next time safe driving and watch out – for children at school Eugene Herbert MasterDrive
