Hi Gills! This month we have a special guest feature: we are very pleased to announce our August scientist, Dr. Eugenie Clark! Known as “The Shark Lady”, Genie founded Mote Marine Laboratory in 1955, has researched sharks and fishes for over 60 years, and has inspired generations of scientists, males and females alike. Most of us in this field learned about Genie and her work early on in our careers, and the influence of her work in shark research, conservation, and exploration is quite apparent within the marine biology community. Throughout the month we will be sharing the dynamic research of Genie, as well as a short biography of her life’s work. Gills Club scientist Dr. Michelle Heupel, who worked at Mote with Genie for nearly ten years, comments: “Genie Clark is a true pioneer being one of the first women to work in this field. She was going out and working with big sharks when women didnt do that kind of thing. It was a huge honor and privilege to have worked with Genie while I was at Mote. She is still actively interested and involved in shark conservation and a true inspiration.” We are thrilled that Genie has taken the time to share her years of research, knowledge, and experience with the Gills Club.
