Hi, Im new to this group and to elizabethan costuming. Ive made a few pieces which I will post photos of soon but I really enjoyed the photos Ive seen here. This is a coif I finished tonight. The embroidery pattern is based on an extant example I found on line. Im a novice embroiderer and started with a dark brown floss I had on hand before deciding it could work and investing in black floss. I drew the pattern onto cotton batiste in pencil but Ive since read that ink would have been used. This makes spence to me as it was hard to see my pencil lines in all but the brightest light. The original had a stitched border, very fine, possibly satin stitch which would have helped with preventing the fabrics from fraying. The original was also stitched all over with spangles. I lined my coif because my embroidery is not so fine that the underside is worth looking at. The coif is hand stitched in a double running stitch. I havent added a chin strap or ties but it seems to stay on well anyway and covers my short hair.
