Hi! Its Travis. Its time for a Travis Box Set. Today its Kate Bush. My love for Kate Bush is absurd. Her recent shows in London got me on a kick (inside) and I thought you know what, I need to make a playlist. I remember the first time I heard her: in 8th grade a friend brought a cassette of Hounds of Love into school and left it in the music room. I was a bit embarrassed that I was interested in it and would only play it when other people werent around. I think I felt like I couldnt be seen with this album with this flowery-scripted cover and this lady lounging around with what appeared to be her dogs? I mean, I was 13, I had a personal brand to tend. But the record was riveting. Like many KB fans I think I found it overwhelming at first. Too much. But I kept sneaking in there to listen to it. (Several years later that same friend blew my mind again when she played me Blue Bell Knoll by the Cocteau Twins!) Over the years my respect for Kate Bush as an artist has only deepened. Hers is one of the truly mature voices in rock and roll history. The commitment to vocal courage and elemental lyrical honesty is always an inspiration. I think if I ever taught a songwriting class and assigned a single song to dissect for lyrical perfection it would be Hounds of Love.
