Hi I’m Malala. I am a product of the U.S war on terror as I was attacked by the fearsome and mad Taliban but I survived. Within days I was a hit. I along with my family are now permanently settled in the UK. The world worships me, media cannot stop chanting my name, countless articles and books have been written on my life and I also recently had my autobiography published. I was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize but sadly I didn’t get it. Nevertheless, the world is my oyster as I’ve been turned into a multinational brand, an icon of heroism, world peace and women’s liberation. Hi I’m Nabila. I also survived but (sadly) I survived a drone attack. Though I lost my grandmother who was blown to smithereens in front of me. My grandmother was my village’s only midwife. I along with my elder brother (aged 13) and six other children were admitted to hospital with shrapnel and burn wounds. This was back in Oct 2012 by the way so for a year or so no one even knew if I existed. I did get a chance in October this year to visit Washington DC to tell my story. However at the Congressional hearing where my family and I gave testimony, only five out of 430 representatives showed up. The translator was brought to tears whilst recounting my story but there was no one to listen. I will go back to my village now and remain faceless like many others who have had their lives destroyed over the past decade of American wars. And my grandmother will be nothing more than a number, a figure…in fact Americans do have a fancy term for people like us…yes, collateral damage!
