Hi! My name is Jennifer Walker and I live, work, train and play in Austin, Texas. Originally from Southern California, I moved to Austin 11 years ago and quickly became immersed in the fit, active outdoors scene (hard not to with as many hiking, biking, running and swimming options you’ll find here)! I grew up watching the Ironman World Championships on TV, and never thought I would be capable of ever doing something like that. Heck – I didn’t even know how to swim. Like many of us who tune in to watch this seemingly super-human feat however, I was inspired by the every-day athletes who defied the odds, invested their heart and soul and tried anyways. Fast forward some 20+ years later and somehow I found myself blessed to be at the starting line of Kona last October. But getting there didn’t happen overnight. I decided to try my first half-marathon 10 years ago. Funny looking back as I thought this was SUCH a long way to run. I wasn’t sure if I could do it – and in fact, turned down running a 3-mile relay leg of a sprint triathlon with a friend just weeks prior. Having successfully completed the half-marathon without a trip to the ER – I upped the ante and signed up for my first marathon in Los Angeles (where, I felt like I needed emergency care when all was said and done). And while my body had suffered through the challenge of 26.2 miles – my heart swelled with amazement, gratitude, confidence and inspiration. And a desire for whatever odd reason to do it again! Soon to follow was triathlon – where I learned how to swim (I could still argue this point – swimming is NOT my forte), made unbelievable friendships and became hooked on the victory and agony that is endurance sports. As for my day job – I serve as the Director of Marketing Communications with the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau. An awesome gig as I get to promote travel and tourism to one of the best destinations in the country. And with what spare time I have left, I can be found hanging out at the dog park with my two best friends, my chocolate lab Bella and my newly adopted black lab puppy Brutus (who recently showed his distaste for my training by eating a brand new pair of Oakley RadarLocks just before Ironman Louisville this past weekend). Gotta love puppies! So proud to be part of Team TBT – and looking forward to meeting everyone on the team!
