Hi Shirley-- Its been almost a week and these poor little Tennessee dogs are finding out how awful Michigan snow can be! Weve had about 4 inches this week and I have no boots for them. They dont care when they first dash out the door--but out in the middle of the yard, they suddenly want to hover. So then we dash back into the house. Everybody gets their feet rubbed down for the ice crystals (after getting an in-the-house treat). They are wonderfully patient and come to me to have that done. I think thats a good sign. We have a pretty set routine--up at 7:15/7:30, dash outside (me in my jammies!), dash inside for breakfast. Everyone eats at the same time. And, now that I soak Biscuits food, hes eating it up as fast as Jewell and Max! I think theres less food competition. Whoever isnt finishing up is getting a head rub while we wait. I decided not to crate them. I have a small bedroom that is on the sunny side of the house. I put their bed in there on top of the single bed. Theres a chair next to the window--they have FOUND their voices, for sure, announcing any one who comes to the house. (My furnace went out Wednesday and we didnt have heat overnight but we got it back Thursday morning--a true three dog night with a portable super-safe electric heater.) So they spend the day in there and it has gone well so far. I make sure I get home for dinner around between 5-6:30 and some play after dinner, then quiet evening, another walk, and down for the night. mostly. I have a great fenced yard--they were all off leash this evening. I cant do that when its dark, but when I can keep track, and especially when they havent had dinner yet, I believe the freedom is fabulous for them. Lots of room to run and they do, snow and all--or at least until they realize their feet are cold! Biscuit has developed a cough. I was up at 1:30 am this morning watching veterinary videos trying to figure out if it is kennel cough, heart murmur cough, or just allergies. All three of them stuck their heads and noses under the snow and into the leaves during one walk. Or, the room is too warm. Or the air is too cold when were outside. Or the house is too dry. Or he really really tugs hard on his collar and he hurt his throat. I will have a humidifier on tonight and he has a new harness so when were walking the stress is not on his throat. If it continues, well visit my vet next week. He does not behave like a sick dog at all. It is an awful lot--having three when Ive had none for a while. and they are much bigger than I thought, not at all lap dogs really. But Jewell looks at me when the boys are roughhousing with her big soulful eyes and its as if I can see the grief there. Max follows me everywhere. Last night I had a rough work meeting in the evening so I went to bed early--probably too early for Max--and he kept coming to my side of the bed (they sleep on their cushion on the floor at the other side of my bed) as if to check on me. And Biscuit--he is so tender. He was coughing so badly, and I came out to check on him again and he was so embarrassed, he hid under the table. He needs approval so very much. ceci
