Hi! So I have a question that I am hoping someone is able to help find an answer too. I am working with video games and what it is that motivates us to play these games. I have found part of the answer in social psychology, working with theories on the human motivational and needs system. The theory in part work with intrinsic needs such as Competence, Autonomy and Connectivity. Now, these seem to work well with explanations as to why we play video games. My aim is to take these theoretical concepts and place them within the explanatory framework of evolutionary psychology. The problem is, I am having a hard time finding an explanation for Autonomy. So this is the question, what possible adaptive explanations or possibly bi-products are in play when talking about the human need for Autonomy? Autonomy in this case is defined as - Having meaningful and intriguing choices in life - which makes it differ from freedom since we do not always need to feel Options to feel autonomy, as long as we act on our own volition (Glued to games, Rigby and Ryan, p. 40) Hope someone is able to help with this - Thanks!!
