Hi Trevor, many people do not realise that the two top scoring RAF pilots for 1940 including France, Dunkirk, etc, were Hurricane pilots-Allard and Lacey and that most of the top ones were also. Here is something I wrote back in 2010:Other men that are talked of for their record in 1940 including France, Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain and up to December 31st 1940 include the big names of Tuck, Bader, Malan, Carey and others as shown below: Lacey 18 +8 probables in the Battle of Britain 501 Hurricane Sqn 23 end 1940 Allard ended 1940 with between 18 and 23 kills including the Battle of France McKellar 17+5 probs 605 Hurricane Sqn and 602 Spitfire Sqn also.(Killed in Action, 1940) some record 19 to 21 victories Frantisek 17+1 Prob 303 Hurricane Sqn (Often quoted as top scorer in the B of B)(Killed in 1940) Jim Hallowes who ended 1940 with between 14 and 17 kills from Dunkirk, France and the Battle of Britain with 43 Sqn. Urbanowicz 15+1 Probable 303 Hurricane Sqn Bob Doe 14(or 15) 234 Spitfire Sqn and 238 Hurricane Sqn. Also there were high scorers in the Battle of Britain, Dunkirk and France who ended up high on the rankings at the end of 1940 who flew Hurricanes or at some time in 1940 including: Edgar Cobber Kaine 17 kills 1940 Killed in the Battle of France 73 Hurricane Sqn and the RAF`s 1st publicized ace. Fanny Orton 18 kills 1940 Battle of France and later A.G.Lewis 18 Battle of France (9 victories France) and Britain (9 also) with 249 and 85 Hurricane Squadrons. Bob Stanford Tuck 18 kills Dunkirk and Battle of Britain with 257 Hurricane Sqn and some with 92 Spitfire Sqn. Denis David with, at least, 14 kills in France 1940 with 87 Hurricane Sqn (some quote as high as 20 but this is wrong) McKnight with 14-16 kills in 1940 including Dunkirk, France and the Battle of Britain Douglas Bader 12 Kills 1940 mainly 242 Hurricane Sqn (and also 222 Spitfire Sqn over Dunkirk) Tom Neil 13 Kills by end 1940 all Battle of Britain I.R.Gleed around 12 Kills 1940 including France Pat Wood Scawen with 12 kills aprox. (Killed in action Battle of Britain) Tony Wood Scawen with 10 kills aprox (Brother of the above pilot, also killed in the Battle of Britain, within 24 hours of his brother). Johnny Kent 9 Kills 1940 303 Hurricane and 92 Spitfire Squadrons. There are many others, some of whom flew both types in 1940, like Tom Dalton-Morgan, Derek Ward, Leslie Clisby, Paul Richey, Roland Beamont, Peter Townsend, The top Ace in the Battle of Britain was a Spitfire pilot: Eric Lock with 22 Kills and 8 Probables Other top scorers in 1940 on Spitfires given by Aces High by Shores are: Colin Gray 15 and 4 probs 54 Spitfire Sqn. Brian Carbury 15 and 2 probs 603 Spitfire Sqn. Pat Hughes 14 and 1 prob (Poss 15) 234 Spitfire Sqn, Killed in action Battle of Britain. George Bennions 12 and 5 probs 41 Spitfire Sqn Other high scoring Spitfire aces in 1940 included: Tony Bartley J.T.Webster Alan Wright Bob Holland Alan Deere Johnny Allen Bodie of 66 Sqn and others. Battle of Britain fighter aces of the RAF some of these are names we never read of but these men of the Few shot down sometimes more than Malan and Bader.
