Hi WIN, I was messing around with some thoughts tonight and somehow the artistic process came into mind. And it beckoned to be defined. What do we mean when we say, the artistic process. How is it done and how best to describe it, the process of creating art. A musician, a painter, a sculptor, a writer, what do they have in common? Do they share a process? The artistic process seems to be, the taking of something from something, and making something of it. This definition seems to be bulky, but I don’t think it can be whittled down to something less than that. I don’t think it is anything short of that. So here it is in a nutshell, the defining moment. The artistic process is: “The taking of something from something, and making something of it.” I think that’s what musicians do. And certainly the sculptor, with chisel in hand, while facing a slab of stone. “The taking of something from something and making something of it.” The painter, with brush in hand, say no more. And writers, what then shall we say of them? Well – writers often start out quite lofty, but when it’s all said and done, they become drunks – the good ones do. They become booze addicts. The same can be said of musicians, sculptors and painters, but why bother. The E STREET BAND transformed over time. This was them – back in 1975 – when Bruce Springsteen had something to prove, and so he proved it. No gimmicks, no charades, he proved you didn’t need that. Just sing the song the way it was meant to be sung. Leave room for some harmony. Dress for the occasion. Maybe throw in a little dance routine. But above all, practice and practice some more, until everyone is tight, and the sound is just right, in summary – no bullshit. Tommy DisCool PS; the Beatles were cute and so was their music, nothing wrong with that, there’s always room for some cute. That said, Penny Lane can kiss my ass. 1 9 7 5 youtu.be/eXFWXgFk5Jo
