Hi Zane, Please keep me anonymous. Im a 26yr old lady, with parents who are beyond controlling and protective. I know that they are only this way because they love me and want to protect me, but I feel at my age, I need to be responsible and take care of myself. I still stay with them, not by choice, but because they wont let me move out. I help them out as much as I possibly can. Im working full time, make a good living and Im paying off my masters studies. However, the stresses of still being treated like a child make me very very unhappy inside. I have a mental condition and the stress this is giving me makes me suicidal. Ive tried speaking to my folks but they just wont let go. I just dont know what to do anymore. Please advice. MY RESPONSE: Unless there is some kind of legal guardianship in place explaining why they have a right to make you live with them, I do not understand why you dont simply move out. If you can work full-time, make a good living and you have a masters, then you need to start looking for a place to live today and try to move by January 15th at the latest. You are right, at your age, it is time to fly the coop and learn to be self-sufficient and live independently. I am not sure what the mental condition is but it does not prevent you from working and getting an education. They probably mean well but I would do what works best for me. They cant make you stay there. Get you a place and announce you are moving on moving day. Good luck and let me know what happens.
