Hi all, 29th December 2014, was day two of round one chemo. I arrived this morning, walking towards the entrance I am feeling sick, mum dashed into the A&E dept as we passed it to grab a sick bowl, just in time! I got to the chemo suite, waited for bloods to be taken, they used my PORTACATH. It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, quick sharp scratch, not as bad as being cannulated, and it was done, it was in. From the device they were able to draw my bloods, which were sent off. After what seemed a lifetime, I am guessing the pathology dept, were very busy, my bloods come back and chemo arrives! Here, ca125 was 282. Remeber though this was taken pre chemo, so I was expecting it to be raised, but actually not as bad as it could have been, its not rising as fast as it was, and that as I said was before chemo. My first raised one mid oct was 43, my one early dec was 200! So see its not that bad. Any way, chemo arrives, it was put through my PORTACATH, (see images) which took half an hour or so. Then the usual flush, then all done. I was un-hooked and sent on my way, not before meeting with my oncologist, who had a quick chat with me. I love the staff on our chemo suite, they are all, wonderful, it takes a special person I think to work in oncology, I just wish I had been able to do a few more shifts on there. So thats an aim.....get better, get back to work, for now one step at a time. So today went well, nothing to fear, if your having this done, its not as bad as it looks, as I said, sharp scratch and its over, non of that sicky feeling you get as they try and consulate what once resembled a vein.......I have to say it was a really good thing done, if your trying to decide, and not sure, its a few days of discomfort, a bit of bruising but that it. This is how it will be for me now, for bloods, or any IV I may need. I had anti -sickness through it today thats helped too! Round one - Complete 5 to go! X
