Hi all! A number of the new ladies at practice have been asking about derby gear: where to get it, what to get, etc. Youre more than welcome to use the rinks gear to get your sea legs, but once you get the knack of things (which you will!), youll quickly find that youd be more comfortable in your own gear. Here is the required gear for roller derby: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet, mouthguard, and skates. Rookie players usually start out with Triple-8 pads and a Triple-8 helmet, and quality quad derby skates made by a well-known company (like Sure-Grip or Riedell). There are all sorts of ways to go about purchasing gear. There are places that will sell you the whole package, like here: rollergirlskates/rookie-packages.aspx (Ive ordered from them and had great service). Or, you can use that sites list of rookie gear as a basis to shop around for better or individualized deals via Amazon or other sites. Alternately, you can look on sites that offer used gear at a reduced rate, like the Facebook group Roller Derby Recyclables. There is also a derby store in Fort Smith if you prefer to shop in person. Feel free to try on different sizes of pads at practice so you get a sense of what fits you best. As well, feel free to ask to try on different brands of speed skates that the rink owns so you know what feels most at home on your feet. Most importantly, just have fun skating! See you at practice!
