Hi all, Be it yellow crazy ants, electric ants, Asian - TopicsExpress

Hi all, Be it yellow crazy ants, electric ants, Asian honeybees, or a host of other foreign species, the Australian wet tropics is on the verge of a major wave of insect invasions. Some species could potentially have major impacts on the ecology and biodiversity of our region—arguably the most important terrestrial ecosystem in Australia. In our TESS seminar this week, David Guez will tell us about his efforts to devise strategies to trap and thereby neutralise the Asian honeybee, a potentially serious invader that could impact not only on native ecosystems and plant-pollinator systems but also on Australian beekeeping and agricultural industries. Its a high-stakes effort to use biology to stop an emerging invader before it develops into the entomological version of the devastating cane toad. The seminar is at 4 PM on Wednesday (August 20). The Cairns venue is A3.2, the Little Crowther Theatre, with a live videolink to the Townsville Audiovisual Services Room 001 (9-001). As always, FREE DRINKS AND NIBBLES AFTERWARD.
