Hi all, Does anyone have any references to research - TopicsExpress

Hi all, Does anyone have any references to research undertaken/historical records/accounts as to the effects WW1/WW2 had upon the non-human animal world? I’m thinking of animals used as part of the military campaigns (e.g. war horses), but also the effects on pets, domesticates (farms), captive animals (zoos), and in particular wild populations. Tony Knight has pointed out to me that there may have been increase in the European bear populations as an example of positives, though I am more interested in the negatives for the time being, in terms of animal deaths and trauma, habitat destruction, and the like. As you will know, the 100th anniversary to WW1 is approaching and I am looking to produce material that draws attention to the devastating effects to the non-human population as this will probably be mostly overlooked in the media. Attached is a powerful image by the Russian photographer, Yevgeny Khaldei, presumably taken on the Eastern Front, originally captioned as Shell-shocked reindeer. Thanks.
