Hi all, I am looking for a new job while early on in my transition and I feel like people are taking a pass on hiring me not because of my skills or knowledge, but the fact that they arent comfortable with my really androgynous appearance right now. Im a transguy, and have been medically transitioning for the past 2+ years, but apparently things are slow going, and instead of being read as male, Im still in that confusing to other people phase. I am a professional employee, working in digital marketing, which tends to be pretty progressive as it is, but theres something holding me back, and the only thing I can figure is its my appearance or mannerisms, or something. I am educated, have the experience, skills, and know-how, so I just cant figure out what else it could be. Ive aced phone interviews, and as soon as I get called in for an in-person interview, its extremely obvious that Im not getting the job at the hello handshake. Have any of you been able to turn this around and use your trans* status (or other diversity status) as a way to get your foot in the door? Its tough, and really starting to weigh on me. 2+ years of a job search with tens of in-person interviews, and being passed up every time really sucks.
