Hi all. Jacob writing. Is it only me, or does it drive other survivors up the wall, when people try to suggest in a well meaning way that it is time to leave the past behind and think about the future. Of course we all have to take responsibility for our future. Why do people say these things. Do they think that we survivors do not understand this. No one knows what it is like to have to leave the past behind, like a survivor. When you try to explain how hard it is, because of the severity of your injury, probably in the hope of getting a little support and understanding, people trot out this nonsense. My guess is that we make them feel nervous because most people are in denial about the effect of their childhood, and it is confronting to meet someone who truly is prepared to look at their past in order to take responsibility for their future. Maybe people do not see it for the nonsense it is because our injuries are emotional, not physical. If I had a car accident and ended up in a wheelchair, I would still have to take responsibility for my future, and part of that would be to acknowledge that my dreams of becoming a professional athelete are over. I wonder if the same people would tell me to pull my socks up, jump out of my chair and go to football training. No one has long enough legs to get to their future by simply stepping over their past. It is we who are brave enough to feel the effect of our past. We are the ones who are taking responsibility for our future.
