Hi all Old and New Bay ites what we love about the Bay is under threat its Called West Byron Development from the Quarry to the Belongil on the south side of the road they are planning to build a housing and industrial estate that will be the population of Mullumbimby. The site is 72% acid sulphate soil and when you turn it over and let air in it turns into Sulfuric acid this will ongoing drain directly into the Belongil and destroy the estuary. The water will be so toxic not only will nothing survive we will not be able to swim or paddle in it. The marine life in the bay itself will loose is fish/marine breeding ground. The sewage works in west Byron cannot handle this level of development raw sewage will flow into the Belongil. Traffic 35% more ????. A by pass is a joke because surveys have shown that only 7 of every 100 cars who take the turn off are going directly through town 93 in 100 are coming to enjoy the lovely Bay not by pass it. Two Koala colonies in the west Byron development site will be lost Our lovely Costal community which is under so much pressure now will be changed for ever. Our local council has knocked this development back and every impact report that has been done on this development has said that it will cause major damage. The developers have taken the plan to the State Government minister Brad Hazzard who can over rule our elected council and the developers dont need to have any management plan to remedy the environmental impact. I urge you to go to Byron Residents Group Facebook page to get more detail and what you can do. My friends and people who I have grown up with say how can they let this happen well the answer is if we don’t do any thing they don’t let it happen WE DO. I know we love the Bay and we share loving memories of place, people and times. Well may be its time we defended these memories as a legacy to our children, grandchildren and the next generation. John and team I know this is not a political site but I don’t think this is a political argument its a community argument.
