Hi all Trafford Parents Forum: The Way Ahead For the past 3 - TopicsExpress

Hi all Trafford Parents Forum: The Way Ahead For the past 3 years, the forum has operated as an unconstituted body, to represent the collective voice of the parents and carers of Trafford’s special needs children. We all have our individual situations and challenges to deal with, but the forum has been actively involved in giving the parents a meaningful role in those areas which affect all or most of us, such as Pathfinder or the Special Educational Needs Review. To date, funding for approximately 150 forums, across the country, has been provided by central government. This funding, to a maximum of £10,000 per year, has allowed us, here in Trafford, to run the forum and provide things like the Information Technology days and parent training in advocacy. Although it does seem that some central funding will continue, for at least the next 2/3 years, there has been no guarantee that the funding will continue at the current level. To secure their future viability, forums across the country, including Trafford, having been looking at ways to access alternative sources of income. The final working format for Trafford Parents Forum will be for the membership to decide, but we do need to be a constituted body to look for other sources of income. The details of the constitution, the voting process and how you can stand for one of the elected posts will be sent to you in the next few days. The newly constituted Forum will take on a lot of existing work, such as those mentioned above, but it is important for the new officers to have an appreciation of what the parents consider their priorities. With that in mind we have arranged to hold a Visioning Event. We did this last year, with the help of the Bury Parents Forum and it was a really productive session (and fun!), to help clarify our thinking about what we wanted to work towards as a body. The event will be over 2 sessions on Tuesday 17th of September at Trafford Conference Centre (formerly Sale West Development Centre) Manor Avenue, Sale, M33 5JX (next door to Manor High School). Daytime session: 10 -12 Evening session: 6.30 – 8.30 This is a real opportunity for parents to give the new officers a plan of action and that should enable them to hit the ground running, once elected. All parents and carers of Trafford’s special needs children, up to the age of 25, are very welcome to be part of it. Hopefully we’ll see you there!! Kind regards Nicky
