Hi all, many of you are asking me WHERE the rubbish goes after its picked up??? Long answer below. Oliviers company, Bali Recycling, pics it us. He has been living here and working on this issue for 2 decades, and is a passionate environmentalist with extensive experience in waste management/recycling: Lucas Morea is in the process of making a flyer with all this info so it will be up soon. We sat down with Olivier to understand this question in-depth. Until the flyer is out, the Bali Recycling website does better job explaining it than I do so... Bali Recycling is the first formally licensed licensed waste company in Gianyar. They provide trash collection. They sort through all the garbage at a facility to try to make ZERO WASTE (meaning as little as possible going to an actual formal dump, which I think is in Denpasar). They operate a material recovery facility (MRF) that recycles tons of paper, plastic, cardboard, metals, cardboard, glass & organic waste every month. Their facility takes the rubbish and collects, sorts, and processes materials that are viewed as waste and transforms them into the raw inputs used to create new products. They recycle, but they also generate biogas from putrid organic waste, divert food waste for animal fodder, prepare biomass into fuel wood, organize glass bottle reuse programs, even converting some wastes into ‘upcycled’ handicraft products and more. They also collect & process Hazardous Materials for both businesses & households, the first operator in Bali to provide these services. The goal of resource recovery is always to make the best use of all materials, and ONLY land-filling those materials for which there is currently no use. Over time, they expect to increase the amounts and variety of waste we are able to recover (reuse, recycle, compost, biogass, upcycle, etc.) so that the volume of landfill-bound material is only a negligible amount. More about OLIVIER: baliexpat.biz/other/olivier-pouillon-bali-recycling/. Oliviers company MAKES SURE THAT AD HOC RUBBISH COLLECTORS and SCAVENGERS do NOT get a hold of materials, and just take the valuable recyclables and then illegally dump the rest. The goal of his companys plant is to basically create as little WASTE as possible - they have a sorting facility where they do all of this.
