Hi everybody! I want to take this opportunity to announce my upcoming net art project: Im going to do an online performance piece called PRIVILEGE.BIZ where I profit off of being an exploitative, privileged jerk as a commentary on commodification in the digital age. It will take place in several stages. First, I will appropriate images of people, mostly women, on facebook, using their likenesses without attribution or compensation, in a for-profit tumblr, which will serve as a commentary on how were all commodified by social media. My making a profit on it will serve as a valuable irony, which will be a commentary on the ways that the digital age only sees things in terms of profit. I will also, in my performance piece, aggressively engage people on the internet using troll tactics like harassment and stalking and triggering language, as a commentary on how people being offended is socially constructed and, um, part of how capital makes us commodify our experiences, or something, ok still working on that part! The images I will use in my work focus on branding, consumerism, female objectification, racial stereotypes and the life practices of the super-rich, as a commentary on how our commodified digital culture enforces ideological presuppositions through the play of digital images. It will also comment on traditional notions of authorship - by profiting off of these images without *intending* to participate in these ideologies, it will comment on how artists are not in control of their work, but are conditioned by outside forces. Were all slaves to capital equally! I will also comment on the inevitability of this by lampooning other alternatives, commenting not only on the commodification of resistance to capital but also on the ever-present cynicism reinforced by the digital age. Next, I will start up a tumblr for these purposes and encourage others to submit to it, furthering the usage of appropriated likenesses and offensive actions by others, as a commentary on how digital cultures commodifies us. My tumblr that I will start and profit off of as a commentary on how incessant competition induces us to exploit other peoples labor, will challenge traditional notions of the authorship by being crowd-sourced and anonymous. My speaking on behalf of this tumblr and profiting off of it will be a commentary on how distributed labor practices are merely a tactic of corporate capitalism, which my performance will mimic as a commentary on the workings of corporate capitalism. Overall, PRIVILEGE.BIZ will demonstrate that the only thing art can do is call attention to the workings of capitalism by participating in it, as a commentary of course. If anything in the work appears to no longer correspond to anything valuable about what art does, consider that a commentary on how unbridled capitalism limits our imaginative capacity for what art is capable of. This work will be subversive, because instead of naively attempting to resist the workings of power through art, or imagine alternative practices for making art, I will participate in capital as a way of accelerating its demise.
