This news editor will work with reporters and fellow editors to plan, develop and execute high-impact enterprise reporting for four Gazette editions a week. The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling -- investigative, explanatory and contextual content that matters. He or she works with an eye toward delivering on audience expectations, as measured by Gazette market research and analytics. He or she will value a beautiful presentation, a great headline, alternative forms of storytelling on multiple platforms and the evolving digital landscape for journalism. The ideal candidate can work quickly and accurately and has ideas on how to present news in an ever-changing media landscape. Content ideas move up and down the reporting pipeline here, and this editor works to maximize them all. Understanding Web concepts and how digital tools can enhance storytelling is expected. Our ideal candidate will be a highly skilled editor for context, logic and narrative flow, as well as the basics of spelling, grammar, etc. This editor will write headlines, captions and related content as needed. This editor is highly organized and will be capable of managing news projects in addition to the editions assigned. He or she is a leader in the newsroom, and a capable and constructive coach for reporters and fellow editors. This editor is expected to collaborate and help others grow. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter who works well in a team setting. Our vision is that we are always stronger together, and the news editor and Sunday editor will work as a team to complete some tasks. This is a management position with responsibility for supervising the copy desk. The ideal candidate’s management style is that of coach, providing regular feedback, growing the team’s skills and holding the staff accountable for reaching goals. Our organization: Our news operation is converged and is a quality-driven newsroom that combines digital, print and broadcast for The Gazette and KCRG-TV9 brands, plus several niche brands. Our company has remained independent for 130 years and is employee-owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise content, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news agencies. While we’re based in Cedar Rapids, we have bureaus in Des Moines and Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours. Qualifications & requirements: Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated and creative problem-solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication skills. Candidate must be highly organized, a confident decision-maker and committed to ongoing collaboration, improvement and coaching. Candidate must have strong writing and editing skills, an eye for design and sound news judgment. Juggling multiple deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment should be expected. An undergraduate degree in journalism, communications or a related course of study is required. Also required is at least 5 years’ newsroom experience -- multimedia newsroom preferred – and at least one year spent leading planning or other editor role. Some management experience preferred. Understanding of journalism ethics and communication law is desired.
