Hi everyone FNDCs Communications Manager has asked if I would draw the following to everyones attention. Apparently Rawene residents are using too much water, and we need to do better: MEDIA RELEASE 4 April 2014 Water warning for Rawene residents Rawene residents must reduce water consumption now or face more austere water restrictions. That is the Far North District Council’s warning to households in the South Hokianga town. Drought conditions forced the Council to introduce water restrictions in Rawene in late February. But continued dry weather since then has reduced flows in Petaka Stream, which supplies the town’s water scheme, to critically low levels. Infrastructure and Assets General Manager David Penny says the situation is critical and people must reduce water usage immediately. “The stream is flowing at extremely low levels. If we don’t get significant rain soon, there simply will not be enough water in the stream to meet current demand.” Mr Penny is disappointed that residents haven’t reduced their water consumption since February, despite the Council writing to households and publicising the restrictions. “We will be monitoring water use. People caught using a hose or sprinkler could face a significant fine.” The Council may impose more severe water conservation measures if water demand doesn’t drop sharply immediately. “We are asking Rawene residents to limit water use to essential household needs. Failing to do so could leave us no option but to reduce the pressure of water supplied to households or – in a worst case scenario – only supply water to households for sanitary purposes.” On a positive note, demand for water has dropped significantly at Opononi-Omapere where the Council introduced water restrictions in January. “We’re not sure if this is because fewer holiday makers are in the area or people have made an effort to reduce their water consumption, but either way this is pleasing to see.” The Council is not yet in a position to remove the water restrictions at Opononi-Omapere or those in force in Kaitaia and Kaikohe. “We are disappointed that Kaitaia households haven’t reduced their water usage. The water situation there isn’t quite as critical as in Rawene, but our message to residents there is the same: cut your water use now or face more severe restrictions.”
