Hi everyone! Let me start by thanking you all for being out there, I joined for a bit today and felt really proud to be standing next to individuals participating in (some semblance) of a discussion. In the activist spirit, I also wanted to share with yall my experiences with the administration in light of the JFA displays. Ive already responded to the Office of the Dean of Student Life as well as sent the response to the Red and Black, but safety in numbers! Basically, I initially sent a complaint avoiding the use of a political argument: we were doing that in Tate Plaza already. Instead, I expressed that while I understood that A) its University policy to allow peaceful demonstration and B) in a stated free speech zone, I took major issue with the graphic images and lack of warning, on the basis that it did not promote discourse over the issue, but rather the images. I received a prompt reply that basically stated what I already knew about University policy with the included The University of Georgia is a marketplace of ideas, and while we may not always agree with the views of others, each is entitled to their right to express those thoughts (What, am I five years old?!). So, Im asking for your continued support in letting the administration know that we either need a better warning system for graphic content on campus or a better promotion of DISCUSSION, not guilting/shaming tactics.
